Will you need documentation?

Yes. To scrap your car with a registered authorised treatment facility (ATF), you’ll need to supply them with photo ID, proof of address and your V5C logbook. You will need to retain the yellow ‘sell, transfer or part-exchange your vehicle to the motor trade’ section.

Where to scrap your car

You must have your car scrapped by a registered ATF. Getting your car scrapped elsewhere is a criminal offence that is punishable by a large fine. Yorkshire Metal Recycling is a DVLA authorised treatment facility offering the best car scrapping services in your area.

Things to do before scrapping your car:

  • Thoroughly inspect your vehicle for part damage and remove personal belongings

  • Contact your insurance company to cancel the policy on your vehicle. Ask if they require any documents from the scrapping process.

  • Take a few pictures of your car to keep any memories associated with it.

What is a Certificate of Destruction?

A Certificate of Destruction (CoD) proves that your car has been disposed of correctly by a registered ATF, and that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle. It will be sent to you within 7 days of destruction.

Contact the DVLA about the scrap

You’ll need to notify the DVLA that you have sold the vehicle to an ATF. This is a legal requirement for scrapping your car. You’ll need to provide them with your details as well as the model, make and registration of your car. You should also give the details of the ATF where your car was scrapped, and the date it was scrapped.

Are the rules different for scrapping an insurance write-off?

Yes. If your insurance company has decided to write-off your vehicle, they will get it scrapped for you. You will need to:

  • Send the vehicle log book (V5C) to your insurance company and retain the yellow ‘sell, transfer or part-exchange your vehicle to the motor trade’ section.

  • Notify DVLA that your vehicle has been written off.

Scrapping a car without keys

You can still scrap a car if you don’t have the keys, as long as you provide the ATF with paperwork that proves you are the owner of the vehicle. You may also need to pay additional costs to account for the extra work.

What is the scrap value of your car?

The scrap value of your car is determined by several factors including the weight, age and model of the vehicle.

The price will also be impacted if your car is missing parts. The best way to find the exact value of your vehicle is to contact a registered ATF for a quote.
